Cosmetic Dermatology

What is it?

Dermatology is a branch of medicine that deals with the structure, functions and diseases of the skin, nails, and hair. Skin, as you might know, is the largest organ in our body and covers nearly 1.73 square meters of our body. Our skin makes up 16% of our body weight.

Apart from protecting our body, our skin has an additional duty of regulating our body temperature. When our body becomes hot, the skin initiates sweating to reduce our body temperature. When we start feeling cold, the skin prevents the loss of heat by tightening the blood vessels in the skin, which can limit the amount of hot blood from reaching the skin. It acts like our very own thermostat.

The practitioners of dermatology are called Dermatologists who are doctors specialized in Dermatology. They help in managing and treating skin diseases and also dealing with cosmetic issues that are found in the skin, hair, and nails.

The most common skin discolouration issue is birthmarks, which are spots or patches found on the skin right from the birth of patients, varying from brown to pink or purple. Certain birthmarks might even cause hemangiomas, a condition of the blood vessels that need to be treated.

Freckles, moles or other skin lesions are some non-cancerous growths found on the skin. These are usually not harmful but are removed for cosmetic reasons.
